Gram Parsons and Cap Rock are forever linked in Joshua Tree’s lore.
🎶 Who Was Gram Parsons?
- Gram Parsons, a country-rock pioneer who blended rock, folk, and country, Gram Parsons was a member of The Byrds (on their Sweetheart of the Rodeo album) and The Flying Burrito Brothers.
- He also collaborated with Emmylou Harris, influencing what became “alt-country.”
- Parsons died young in 1973 at the age of 26, from a drug and alcohol overdose in Joshua Tree, California.
🌵 The Cap Rock Connection
- After his death at the Joshua Tree Inn, Parsons’s family planned to return his body to Louisiana for burial.
- But Parsons had once told he’s band manager Phil Kaufman and some friends that he wanted his ashes scattered in Joshua Tree, near his favorite spot: Cap Rock.
🔥 The Infamous Incident
- Parsons’s road manager, Phil Kaufman, and a friend intercepted the body at Los Angeles International Airport.
- They drove it back to Joshua Tree in a borrowed hearse.
- At Cap Rock, they attempted to cremate him with gasoline. The makeshift cremation partially burned the coffin before authorities intervened.
- Parsons’s remains were eventually recovered and buried in Louisiana, but the legend stuck.
✨ Legacy at Cap Rock
- Since then, Cap Rock has become a pilgrimage site for Gram Parsons fans.
- For years, people left graffiti, tributes, and shrines at the boulder — though the National Park Service eventually cleaned much of it to preserve the natural site.
- Still, music lovers often stop at Cap Rock to honor Parsons, sometimes leaving flowers, guitar picks, or notes.
